MIDVALE GARAGE

What existed at the corner of Melrose and Ringwood Avenues during the beginning of the 1900's is pictured above. Neither structure exists and both were razed to make way for the garage building pictured below. The residence to the right rear was known as the Murchio house and still exists in mostly original condition.

In the above photo, the sign over the store's front door tells us it was an A & P grocery store. The words Pacific Tea Company are visible.

The photos on this page are all from the personal collection of Mrs. Gloria Gardella and were donated to the Wanaque Library. They are presented here through their courtesy.

Pictured in front of the Mecahnic's Hall, adjacent to the old garage is Andrew Murchio in the driver's seat of this period race car. The Murchio house is to the left rear.

The above buildings later gave way to a repair garage and gas station known as the Midvale Garage. It was built between the Mechanic's Hall and the corner at Melrose Avenue.

In the photo above, the building on the left is Jordan's Midvale Sweet Shop.

Looking closely at the above photo, you will notice that various brand of gasoline were sold. The second pump from the left is Texaco and the two pumps on the right are Gulf.

The garage, as in any town, often becomes a social gathering point. Apparently the gentlemen above were known as the Blue Ribbon Boys. Andrew Murchio is identifed as being on the extreme right. Next to him in the white shirt, with the cigarette, is "Pop" Jordan. (This photo was stamped on the back, "Carl Baker Photographer, Laura Ave., Wanaque.)

This photo is likely in the early 1950's. Take note of the price of gas....24.9 cents a gallon!
